he KwaZulu-Natal Department of Agriculture, led by Hon. Thembeni KaMadlopha Mthethwa, in partnership with uMshwathi Local Municipality, recently spearheaded an agricultural development programme aimed at empowering emerging farmers with knowledge and skills in maize production.
On 20 March 2026, members of the Swayimane community in Ward 6, eSitezi, gathered at the Dutch Church for a comprehensive training session on maize planting procedures.

The programme forms part of ongoing efforts to strengthen local agricultural capacity and promote food security within the municipality.
Ward 6 Councillor, Cllr Spha Shezi, expressed appreciation for the initiative, highlighting that the Swayimane area possesses highly productive land suitable for a variety of crops. While sugarcane farming currently dominates, the introduction of maize production training opens up broader opportunities for local farmers to diversify their agricultural activities.

Ms Bukeka Msibi from the Department of Agriculture outlined the key components of the training, which included soil sampling techniques, identification and management of maize diseases using appropriate chemicals, correct fertiliser application, maize nutrition, and an overview of maize-based products.
The programme marks a significant step towards equipping local farmers with practical knowledge to enhance productivity, improve livelihoods, and contribute to sustainable agricultural development in the uMshwathi.
