The Honourable Speaker of the uMshwathi municipality, Cllr. Mbatha Ntuli, heeded the call from Sukumasakhe and the war room report, requesting traditional leadership to oversee the well-being of young girls.
Women also voiced their concerns about gender-based violence. Challenges have consistently been a catalyst for action by uMshwathi’s leadership.
The former uMgungundlovu District Mayor, Mama Thobekile Maphumulo, widow of the late Chief Mhlabunzima Maphumulo, spoke to Matriarchs, female councillors, and uMshwathi staff about confronting the issues they face. She shared her own experiences with serious challenges and threats during her husband’s life and encouraged women to be brave, believe in themselves, and collaborate with government entities to safeguard their lives. She also urged them to seize the economic growth opportunities in their localities.
The Honourable Speaker of the uMshwathi Municipality, Councillor Mbatha-Ntuli, assured all participants that the leadership is ready to provide any necessary support. She further stated that the government is committed to collaborating with Amakhosi and all traditional structures.
She also reminded them that 29 May 2024 is voting day, encouraging a free and fair election process without any intimidation or threats, allowing for the election of a democratic government that cares for the people, one that provides free education, adequate healthcare systems, housing, various grants, support for the indigent, and more.
